Indenting merged blocks

The indents applicable to merged paragraphs depend on a number of factors. For example:

  • whether the merge is triggered implicitly by a label or explicitly from a normal block;

  • whether the label precedes or is a child of the block being merged;

  • whether the material being merged is itself a block, or simply follows a block/label element.

The various permutations are too numerous to list here, so you should always check the output to see if the desired indent is being applied. However as a very rough rule of thumb, left margins/indents are controlled by the merging block, while right margins/indents are controlled by the following block.

See “Merging paragraphs” for more information on paragraph merging.
