First/Left Indent

The First/Left indent has the following effect:

  • If positive, indents the first line of the paragraph — a standard first line indent.

  • If negative, outdents the first line of the paragraph — a hanging indent.

  • If zero (the default), leaves the first line with the same left margin as the rest of the paragraph.

It is important to note that a line indent has no effect whatever on the remaining lines of the paragraph. For example, if you want a 2 pica hanging indent with the first line starting at the current (parent) margin, then set the Left Margin to 2 picas and the First/Left indent to -2 picas.

Also note that it is not possible to set text outside the column boundaries. So, for example, a very large hanging indent will be reduced if necessary to keep the text within the column.
