Vertical spacing

Column footnotes

The vertical space between the column body text and the first footnote in that column is controlled by the $colnote-separator mapping and the paragraph above spacing in force at the start of the footnote content.

The vertical space between subsequent column footnotes is defined by the paragraph above spacing declared at the start of the footnote. To prevent the allocation of space below the last column footnote in a column, paragraph spacing declared below each column footnote is always discarded.

Page footnotes

The vertical space between the data block region and the first page footnote on the page is controlled by the $pagenote-separator mapping and the paragraph above spacing declared at the start of the footnote content.

The vertical space between subsequent page footnotes is defined by the paragraph above spacing declared at the start of the footnote. To prevent the allocation of space below the last page footnote on a page, paragraph spacing declared below each page footnote is always discarded.
