The mappings listed under the headfoot item in the left pane provide content for fixed blocks in the page layout. These are areas separate from the main text area that are typically used to display such things as titles and page numbers. The name of each mapping corresponds to a content name defined in the layout.

Traditionally this information appears above and/or below the main text (hence the names headers and footers), but fixed blocks can be used to position data anywhere on the page. See the Layout Editor Manual for information about creating fixed blocks.

Note that TopLeaf does not process Running Heads (continuation lines) and Footnotes as headers or footers. These are set within the main text columns (see Notes for details).

A header/footer mapping is removed when it has no content and it is not referred to by any fixed blocks in the current layout (see below).
