The <marginrule/> command

The <marginrule/> directive declares the start and end of a change bar or the location of a deletion marker.

[Note] Note

You can also use a font mask to apply font characteristics to content that is new or changed.

Change bars

The start and end positions of a change bar can be triggered by either a Start Tag tab and End Tag tab mapping, or by the <marginrule/> directive. A change bar is rendered as a vertical line drawn within the margin rule region associated with a data block. The vertical line extends from the start point of the marked change up to the end point of the marked change. Use the following command to declare the start and end of a change bar:

<marginrule action="ACTION" />

where

  • ACTION specifies the margin rule action. The value is either start or end. If this option is not specified, then the default action is end.

Deletion markers

A deletion marker is a special type of margin rule that identifies a change bar deletion. Like change bars, deletion markers are output within the margin rule region associated with a data block and can be rendered as:

  • a horizontal rule (the default)

  • a character

Use the following command to declare a deletion marker:

<marginrule action="delete" />
