Layout Editor Interface

The user interface for the Layout Editor is shown in the following graphic.

The left part of the window shows a representation of the currently-selected page type. This is an interactive view which allows you to select blocks and change their position and size with the mouse.

At the top of the right part of the window is a drop-down list that lets you select the page type to display. The Edit menu contains an item that controls whether this list is sorted. Below this is a set of tabs that display information about the page type.

The Page tab displays information that relates to the entire page.

The Data tab displays information about data and related blocks.

The Blocks tab allows you to select a particular block and change its information.

The Options tab allows you to select various options that affect the way the layout works.

After making changes you must save the layout before it can be used by the composition engine. Select Save from the File menu or type Ctrl+S to save the current layout. You can leave the editor open while you run the composition engine; this makes it easy to switch between the page preview and the layout editor while you are developing a layout.

Select Exit from the File menu to close the editor.

[Note] Note

There are two cases where the editor will open in a read-only mode that prevents you from making changes:

  • if the file that contains the layout (layout.xml) does not have write permission; or

  • if the Read-Only Format Files box is ticked in the Format Options dialog.

In either case the title bar of the window will show “(Read only)”. If you need to change the layout, close the editor, change the file permissions and/or format options and restart the editor.

[Note] Note

When you open a layout created by an older version of the editor, a message box may appear to inform you that the layout needs to be updated. The layout will be automatically updated when you save it.
